A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back after a chemical peel is smoother and younger looking. Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, skin discoloration and scars — typically on the face.
Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin on the face, neck, or hands. They involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This process removes dead skin cells and stimulates the production of new skin cells, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin.
Chemical peels can be categorized into three main types based on their depth of penetration:
1. Superficial peels: These peels use mild acids, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), to exfoliate only the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). They are used to improve mild skin discoloration, rough texture, and fine wrinkles. Superficial peels typically require little to no downtime, and the skin usually heals within a few days.
2. Medium peels: Medium-depth peels penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin (epidermis and dermis) using stronger acids, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA). They are effective for treating more pronounced wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven pigmentation. Medium peels may require several days of downtime as the skin heals and peels.
3. Deep peels: Deep peels penetrate deeply into the middle layer of the skin (dermis) using strong acids, such as phenol. They are reserved for treating severe skin concerns, such as deep wrinkles, extensive sun damage, and significant skin laxity. Deep peels typically require more downtime, and the skin may take several weeks to fully heal.
Chemical peels are performed by dermatologists or licensed skincare professionals in a clinical setting. The type and strength of the peel are determined based on the individual’s skin type, concerns, and desired outcomes. After the procedure, it’s essential to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by the practitioner to ensure proper healing and optimal results.
